Due to its high altitude of 1380 m above sea level, Jowai experiences warm and pleasant summers with cool to chilly winters. Jowai was the political and commercial Centre of Jaintia Hills since the British rule in India. Legend says that, the Jaintia Hills did not belong to the territory of the Khasi Hills and also were not under the Khasi kings. They had their own administration under the Jaintia kings who resided in a town called Jaintiapur in Surma valley. In 1835, the British captured Jaintia hills and collected regular taxes like land tax and property tax. Later, the property tax was changed into house tax in 1860 and also the British introduced the income tax and taxes on fish and on trees in the same year. With that imposition, the people revolted in 1862 and their superiority in arms enabled the British to control the Jaintia people in 1863 after 15 months of fighting. Overnight stay at Sohryngkham

SHILLONG

And go for Full Day Tour of Shillong About Shillong Away from the mainland, Northeast India is a hidden treasure of unparalleled beauty waiting to be explored. An abode of tranquil and serene valleys, waterfalls, parks, caves, and awe-inspiring landscapes, it also grooves to the loudest and most happening musical festivals in the nation. Away from the scorching heat and chaos prevalent in the cities, Shillong, with its misty drizzles and pleasant gashes of wind, will wake your senses to hidden life. Brimming with modernity and a house of some of the oldest tribes at the same time, Shillong is a rare amalgamation of the past and the present. Come and experience what paradise on earth feels like in the “Abode of Clouds”. Shillong is a celebration of culture, history, nature, and life; a celebration that you just cannot miss being a part of. There is no dearth of heart-capturing places to visit in Shillong. MAWPHLANG & MAWSYNNRAM

After breakfast go for day excursion to Mawphlang Sacred Grove and Mawsynram, once the wettest place of Earth. Mawphlang One of the most remarkable features of the Khasi Hills are the sacred forests, which have been preserved by traditional religious sanction, since the ancient days. The sacred grove has an amazing life form of plants, flowering trees, orchids and butterflies. Inside the outer rim, the sacred groves are virtually Nature's Own Museum. We will go for Sacred Grove Walk Evening free for shopping at Shillong Overnight stay at Shillong Mawsynram Ever thought of a place where waterfalls are so plentiful that they become a nuisance? That can be the scene on the highway to the famed town of Mawsynram when your vehicle might just have to drive right through a monsoon cascade falling from the mountainside. The Mawsynram plateau region has received enough attention for its world-record rainfall but there are many more unique sights here. Krem Puri is the longest sandstone cave in the world. Getting to the entry requires a steep descent down one of the valley slopes. The labyrinth has just been recently mapped and visitors need to go in with proper caving gear and with a local guide.
Day 8

CHERRAPUNJEE

After breakfast depart for Cherrapunjee (Sohra)/ Visit local sightseeing points - Mawkdok Dympep Valley, Dain Thlen Falls, Nongsawlia Church & Cemetery, Eco Park & Nohkalikai Falls Cherrapunjee – The Rain Capital of India Cherrapunjee is a small town located on the southern edge of Khasi Hills, a dissected plateau at an altitude of about 4823 feet (1484 m) above mean sea level. The meteorological observatory is situated at 4267 feet (1313 m) above MSL. Cherrapunjee is locally and now officially known as ‘SOHRA’. Khasi people of Mon-Khmer origin inhabit it. It is the headquarters of Sohra Civil Sub-Division and falls in East Khasi Hills District of the Indian State of Meghalaya. Meghalaya is one of the seven states of North East India with Assam to its North and sharing an international border with Bangladesh on its South. As one proceeds northward from the Bay of Bengal over the plains of Bangladesh lying at almost sea level, the Khasi Hills erupt abruptly out of the flat lands towering to a height of about 4500 feet above MSL. The deep gorges around Cherrapunjee help to funnel and converge the low flying rain bearing clouds over Cherrapunjee. Transfer to Guest House at the end of the Tour Overnight stay at Cherrapunjee
Day 9

CHERRAPUNJEE CAVES

After breakfast go for day excursion to the Caves of Cherrapunjee Mawsmai Cave You do not have to be a professional spelunker to get a taste of Meghalaya’s cave systems. There are some places inside the Mawsmai cave where you will need to squeeze around and crawl – and this adds to the experience of cave exploration. The cave is also famous for its fossils, some which you can spot if you spend some time peering at the walls and formations inside. These subterranean cave networks spread across the southern ranges like a complex network of routes formed by the erosion of limestone and unrelenting flow of water. The Mawsmai offers a glimpse into this fascinating world underneath our feet. Drive to Ghty & overnight stay at Ghty Arwah Cave The entrance to Arwah Cave is straight out of the Arabian Nights, a large sunken chamber that leads to a complex set of caverns. Arwah cave is of Meghalaya’s most famous caves and is pretty accessible to regular visitors. It is famous for its fossils which you can observe in the lit-up interiors, especially towards the end of the cave. You will find crustacean shells and fish bones fossilized in the limestone walls of the cave. Arwah, apart from being a place for enthusiasts of natural history, will also surprise you with its many turns and corners – a maze where you are walking one minute under a high cave ceiling, and sliding the next minute through a narrow passageway that leads to other sections. The underwater streams have continued to flow through these ancient cave formations for millennia. All Saints’ Church, Shillong
